Sunny Farms Landfill and Hazardous Waste

Monday, March 6, 2023

In recent weeks, there has been confusion and misinformation about the kinds of materials accepted by WIN Waste Innovation’s Ohio landfills, Sunny Farms Landfill in Seneca County and Tunnel Hill Reclamation in Perry County.

Sunny Farms and Tunnel Hill predominantly accept waste from construction projects and commercial sources including construction and demolition debris, as well as household solid waste.

Neither Sunny Farms Landfill nor Tunnel Hill Reclamation accepts hazardous waste. For this reason, an incident such as happened in East Palestine, Ohio cannot occur for waste transported to or disposed of at our landfills.

Nevertheless, in the rare occurrence that we would need to respond to an emergency at one of our landfills, we have a comprehensive and proactive Emergency Action Plan designed to provide guidance and procedures in such events.

The response plan consists of written programs, comprehensive training for all our employees on 41 applicable OSHA and related safety topics, routine site reviews and inspections, and a detailed annual audit. In addition, our rail teams are trained, and our rail operations are audited by an industry-leading rail safety expert. Finally, we have a Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plan certified by an independent professional engineer, which includes federally mandated response procedures including regulatory reporting in the event of a spill.

We appreciate the opportunity to clarify any misunderstanding of our operations and are here to answer any questions you may have.

The following is an excerpt from Governor Dewine on 3/1/23:

Hazardous Waste Removal

According to the Ohio EPA, approximately 1.8 million gallons of liquid wastewater have been hauled out of East Palestine in total.

  • Approximately 150,000 gallons have been shipped to Vickery Environmental in Vickery, Ohio, to be disposed of through deep well injection.
  • Approximately 1.4 million gallons have been shipped to Texas Molecular in Deer Park, Texas, to be disposed of through deep well injection.
  • Approximately 300,000 gallons have been hauled to Detroit Industrial Well in Romulus, Michigan to be disposed of through deep well injection.

The Ohio EPA reports that approximately 700 tons of solid waste have also left the derailment site.

  • Ross Incineration Services in Grafton, Ohio, has received approximately 40 tons to be incinerated.
  • Approximately 200 tons have been hauled to Heritage Thermal Services in East Liverpool, Ohio, to be incinerated.
  • Approximately 400 tons have been shipped t o U.S. Ecology Wayne Disposal in Belleville, Michigan, to be placed in a landfill.
